Behavioural Based Safety: STOP-BBS programme
Behavioural Based Safety (BBS) uses the science of behaviour change
to solve the problem of workplace accidents. By analysing the actions
people perform, and understanding why they perform them in a certain
way, we can define and encourage safe behaviours. We can also find out
what stops people from adopting them.
We have trained 88 employees as part of our STOP-BBS programme
since March 2014. These safety ‘foot soldiers’ conduct a minimum of
two monthly walkabouts. Each walkabout requires the observer to:
• Carry out safety observations
• Spot potential compliance issues
• Survey co-workers’ concerns about working practices
• Encourage safe practices
• Identify risky behaviours
